TMnet Announcement

Thursday, January 18, 2007
ANNOUNCEMENT

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) would like to announce that its Internet services, which are experiencing some degradation in performance due to the international link outage caused by the earthquake off Taiwan on December 26th, 2006, has already recovered more than 80 per cent bandwidth capacity for its Internet traffic to-date.

The consortium is still fervently working towards the full restoration of the submarine cables affected by the incident. However, due to the bad weather conditions in that area hampering restoration works, we expect the full recovery of our bandwidth capacity for Internet traffic by January 23rd, 2007.

We wish to assure you that TM is doing all that is possible to fully restore our services as soon as possible. Your patience is much appreciated during this restoration process.

Customers can call our Customer Interaction Centre at 1-300-88-9515 (24 hours) or 1-300-88-1515 from 8.00 a.m. till midnight, or e-mail custcare@tm.net.my for any enquiries.

Pengenalan diri melalui RFID

USD636 million trans-Pacific cable project

Asia Netcom, a former unit of China Netcom Group that was bought out by private equity last year, has announced that it and several partners will build a new trans-Pacific cable at a cost of USD636 million. The cable, a loop, will connect Japan with the United States on its northern route, and will connect the Philippines to the United States via Guam and Hawaii on its southern route. Asia Netcom’s partners in the project include the three private equity firms that bought the regional network operator last year - Spinnaker Capital, Clearwater Capital and Ashmore Investment – as well as several others.

The new cable's southern route will be the first connecting Asia with the US without going through Japan, and is expected to be 26% faster for southeast Asia clients than the traditional routes through Japan. The southern route will also avoid the seismically active area south of Taiwan, where several major cables were damaged after a large earthquake struck the area on 26 December last year, leading to major service disruptions.

TM Forms Partnership With Bahrain's Etisalcom

MANAMA (Bahrain), Jan 16 (Bernama) -- Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM), which plans to expand its services into the Gulf Region, Tuesday formed an alliance with Etisalcom, a telecommunication provider in Bahrain, to set up, market and maintain the region's first high capacity internationally managed Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) link.

TM chief executive officer for Malaysia business, Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, said Etisalcom would offer global Internel Protocol Virtual Private Network (IPVPN) running on the MPLS link, powered by TM, to Bahrain's government agencies, corporate and business communities.

"This will provide companies in Bahrain the ability to communicate more efficiently and securely," he said.

"For the first time, companies here will be able to conduct secured date exchange and have direct video conferencing with their offices in Asia," he told reporters after signing the partnership agreement with Etisalcom, here Tuesday.

The agreement was signed between Zamzamzairani and Etisalcom's chief executive officer Rashid Al Snan and witnessed by Etisalcom's chairman, Abdulrahman Jamsheer.

According to Zamzamzairani, the link will provide customers with substantial savings by enhancing bandwidth availability, flexibility and speed.

He said under the agreement, a dedicated pipe has been set up, running from TM's premises in Malaysia to the Etisalcom offices in Bahrain through reliable submarine and terrestrial cables.

TM will further extend the MPLS network's reach to the Far Eastern countries and also around the world through its own network or via partners, he added.

Al Snan said Etisalcom aimed to offer the next generation telecom infrastructure for all technology-intensive global companies, helping to create efficiency in their business operations.

Moving forward, Etisalcom will have multiple services and products built upon the link, for the benefit of customers in Bahrain and West Asia, he said.

Zamzamzairani said TM would continue to work closely with its partner, Etisalcom, to further expand its business in the region to meet global needs.

He said the group, which has a presence in 13 countries, had already entered into an alliance with Raya Telecom to set up and maintain MPLS link for the Egyptian market.

WiMAX licences to be awarded before end-Feb

THE winners of the WiMAX spectrum tender will be announced as early as end of this month, but not later than end of February, Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said in Putrajaya yesterday. The official announcement will end months of speculation on which companies will be allocated the 2.3GHz spectrum. Dr Lim did not disclose how many WiMAX licences the Government plans to issue. It was reported in October that the ministry plans to award up to four WiMAX licences, possibly in two stages.

There will be three to four licences available, but I may roll out (issue) two licences first. It's not necessary that I have to give out all four (at one time), Dr Lim said.

A total of 17 companies applied for the WiMAX spectrum, including Maxis Communications, Telekom Malaysia, DiGi.Com, REDtone International, MiTV Corp and NasionCom Holdings.

The acceleration in the deployment of WiMAX, the latest wireless technology, by the Goverment is one way of increasing the rate of personal computer and Internet adoption across the country, says the world’s biggest chipmaker Intel Corp.
The company, whose Asian Broadband Campaign involves working with South-East Asian governments in stepping up wireless broadband deployment, believes that WiMAX can serve as the basis in helping governments achieve the goal of having digital inclusion.
“Standards-based wireless broadband connectivity can help enable technologies facilitate better services in areas like
education, healthcare, agricultural productivity and incomes, e-government access and technologies that support the overall well-being of a country’s development,” Intel’s chief information officer Stacy Smith told Business Times in Penang.
Smith said Intel is taking the lead in coordinating with governments, carriers and regulators in the region, along with those in the education, health and agriculture public sectors.
“This is to help the deployment to happen at every stage, which includes spectrum availability, product specifications and spectrum support, in spurring the deployment of WiMAX across the Association of South-East Asian Nations,” he said.
WiMAX is an emerging technology that promises to cover entire cites with high-speed wireless Internet links.
Smith said there are currently 100 WiMAX trials taking place worldwide.

Floods force Malaysia evacuation

A second wave of flooding has forced authorities in Malaysia to evacuate more than 90,000 people from their homes in the southern state of Johor.

Major rivers have burst their banks cutting off a number of towns.

One town was completely submerged, with only rooftops standing above water in some areas, local media reported.

The new floods come as many were returning home from shelters following the first round of flooding in December that killed at least 17 people.

Heavy rains have deluged Johor, the state that borders Singapore, for four days and forecasts show no sign of it easing.

Some 355 relief centres have been set up on higher ground to shelter the huge number of displaced people.

There are unconfirmed reports of two deaths among flood evacuees from leptospirosis, a water-borne disease that is spread through rat, dog and cattle urine.

The government is reported to be mobilising teams from across the country to establish medical units at all the relief centres in an attempt to try to avert a health crisis.

Thousands of people were already living in shelters in Johor following the first round of flooding which struck in late December.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said late on Friday that a state of emergency may be declared if the floods worsen. He said the government would closely monitor the situation.

Office 2007 fresh look

THE first thing you’ll notice in the new 2007 Microsoft Office is a whole new user interface and less of the traditional menus and toolbars which have been around since the application was first introduced.
Over the years, each new version of the software had more and more menus and toolbars, up to a point when Microsoft Office 97 came out, users felt Office was “bloated” with hard-to-find features.
When Word 2003 was introduced, there were close to 300 menu items, 31
toolbars and 19 task panes, from fewer than 50 menu items and two toolbars when it first started out, says Jensen Harris, Microsoft Corp’s Office User Experience Lead Program manager.
“In a sense, we knew that we outgrew the menu and toolbar system,” he says.
Work on the Office 2007 user interface started in August 2003 and became the single biggest user interface project ever done at Microsoft, with US$300 million (RM1.11 billion) spent in research and development.
It took a team of people with various backgrounds in music, architecture, theatre art, art direction and research scientists and usability scientists to create the new user interface, says Harris.
“The thing about user interface is that it is more of an art than it is a science. In the end, the creation of a user interface is the creation of a language used for the computer to communicate with human beings. It’s really the melding of art and science and we needed both kinds of people on the team to make something like this possible,” he explains.
For the first time, the design of the new user interface was based on actual data of how people used Microsoft Office. Office 2003 users were able to opt into a Customer Experience Improvement programme that collected anonymous data about how Office is used.
With over two billion data sessions collected and hundreds of data points, Microsoft knew, for example, how many times people clicked on items and the order in which they clicked things.
Microsoft also visited users to understand how people worked. There were also monitors that tracked the direction of eye movements and the time it fixates at certain points.
It also compared the time it took for users to find certain features and reproduction of documents in both Office 2003 and 2007. The company, in addition, researched the learning curve for the new user interface and how productivity increased after specific periods of time.
Based on the research, Harris and his team were surprised at how poorly menus and toolbars actually work in usability terms.
“We really overestimated our user interface in the past. People have been familiar with menus and toolbars for a long time that everyone had sort of figured out ways of working around them, but when you actually looked at them in the usability lab, we found that they’re not very successful.”
To bring improvements, among others, the team looked at possible design concept. One design was called “the ring” and the idea behind it was to have this place to browse through the different things that were possible in Office.
“It would sort of ‘see’ when you last used them, and how long you used them,” Harris explains.
There were ideas to merge menus and toolbars, and one design came with animation that sounded like light sabres. There was also an idea for “parking spaces” where different task panes were set up, with the most important commands being on top and less important ones being below it.
What finally made it to the final user interface were the Ribbon concept and features like tabs, groups, galleries, contextual tabs, mini toolbars and live previews.
“The new user interface is about getting you the best tool when you need it, and when you don’t need it, we put it away,” Harris says.
He details that the new user interface is really designed to make the software easier to use, help users find features that are in Office, get the most functionality, be more efficient and create powerful and beautiful documents.
There may be no more menu or toolbar structure but Harris says that the user interface is not that much different from its predecessors.
“In the end, it’s still buttons that you press. It has the top line of text which very much feels like the menu bar and the things that are below it feel very much like a toolbar,” he states.
What’s important is that people get used to it very quickly, go beyond their proficiency level and discover more things they can do to be much more proficient.
“It’s our goal that people can sit down and be immediately productive with the new user interface,” he adds.

'Tsunami' kecil landa Jepun

TOKYO 13 Jan.

map of the epicentre

Internet services will not be fully restored until end of Jan (maybe....)

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake just south of Taiwan knocked an unprecedented seven submarine communications cables out of service on 26 December, impairing international communications to Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Korea, and Malaysia.

Many observers have speculated that the cable outage has been exacerbated by a lack of investment in Asian cable infrastructure, or by Asian network capacity constraints. TeleGeography’s Submarine Cable Map 2007 dispels this myth: a diverse array of undersea cables connect the countries of Asia to one another and to the world. In the past year, three of these cable systems, Asia Netcom’s EAC, FLAG and REACH’s North Asia Loop and the APCN-2 consortium cable upgraded their networks’ capacity, in order to accommodate growing traffic volumes. However, even after these upgrades, most intra-Asian systems are operating at less than 15% of their potential capacities, leaving plenty of room for future traffic growth.

Sources with China Netcom (CNC) said seven repair ships have been working round-the-clock, but the nature of the undersea terrain and bad weather had combined to slow work. To make matters worse, the extent of the damage to the cables was initially underestimated......
China Telecom said another reason for the delay was the dense and intricate distribution of trans-oceanic networks in the area off Taiwan. It said the most optimistic estimation for resumption of full services is Jan. 20.

What steps can be taken to protect against future network outages in Asia?

The upcoming deployment of new cables, such as the Trans Pacific Express and Asia American Gateway, will provide new routing options, helping to improve networks’ resiliency. While many buyers already purchase capacity on multiple cable systems to provide redundant capacity, network operators may procure capacity on an even more diverse array of cable systems in earthquake prone regions, and deploy fault-tolerant mesh networking technologies over these cables.

Finally, these outages may increase interest in routing more capacity from Asia and Europe over the trans-Russia networks of Rostelecom and TransTeleCom. Once again, my apologies for the size of the map but it is important if only to give you a feeling of security.

Monitor LCD

Response time

Paparan LCD menggunakan transistor dimana ia memerlukan masa untuk on atau off (time to turn on or turn of). Ia bermaksud ada ukuran masa transistor untuk on atau off dan bila pixel yang berkaitan berubah kepada keadaan tertentu. Ia juga dikenali sebagai masa naik iaitu bila transistor on dan masa jatuh bila transistor off. Ia mempengaruhi paparan imej.

Solat Jumaat

Juzu’ 28
Surah 62
11 ayat

Repairing cable still going

by Dr Mohamed b. Awang Lah
Saturday, 06 January 2007 10:11 AM

ImageIn any crisis such as the current one, we always look forward to receive frequent updates from the service providers or cable operators. We can see clearly who are actually caring and responsive and who could not care less. After eight (8) days, one service provider is still checking the agreement to find out whether or not certain circuit is supposed to be restored! Many similar operators prefer to keep mum and compel everyone to play the guessing game on the work progress.

Fortunately, at least one operator never fails to give daily updates. It gives detailed description (including names) of the ships being dispatched to the affected site and the estimated time for every step of the restoration process. One ship actually encountered problem while attempting to repair a cable. The ship itself has to be repaired first – causing more delay to the restoration job. Anyway, I wish service providers in Malaysia emulate such culture of transparency.

At this point we know that at least eight (8) major cables have been damaged caused by the earthquake. These are:

APCN – Asia Pacific Cable Network – 10 Gbps
APCN2 (2 faults) – 160 Gbps (maximum 2.56 Tbps)
FNAL (2 faults) – FLAG North Asia Loop – 160 Gbps (maximum 2.4 Tbps)
FEA – FLAG Europe Asia – 10 Gbps
China-US (2 faults) – 80 Gbps
EAC (4 faults) – East Asia Crossing – 120 Gbps
SMW3 (2 faults) – South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe – 70 Gbps

How BitTorrent Works

BitTorrent is a protocol that enables fast downloading of large files using minimum Internet bandwidth. It costs nothing to use and includes no spyware or pop-up advertising.

Unlike other download methods, BitTorrent maximizes transfer speed by gathering pieces of the file you want and downloading these pieces simultaneously from people who already have them. This process makes popular and very large files, such as videos and television programs, download much faster than is possible with other protocols.

In this article, we'll examine how BitTorrent works and how it is different from other file-distribution methods. In addition, you'll learn how to use BitTorrent and what the future might hold for this innovative approach to serving files over the Internet.

BitTorrent Speak
Like most Internet phenomena, BitTorrent has its own jargon. Some of the more
common terms related to BitTorrent include:
  • Leeches - People who download files but do not share files on their own computer with others
  • Seed or seeder - A computer with a complete copy of a BitTorrent file (At least one seed computer is necessary for a BitTorrent download to operate.)
  • Swarm - A group of computers simultaneously sending (uploading) or receiving (downloading) the same file
  • .torrent - A pointer file that directs your computer to the file you want to download
  • Tracker - A server that manages the BitTorrent file-transfer process

Traditional Client-Server Downloading
To understand how BitTorrent works and why it is different from other file-serving methods, let's examine what happens when you download a file from a Web site. It works something like this:

  • You open a Web page and click a link to download a file to your computer.
  • The Web browser software on your computer (the client) tells the server (a central computer that holds the Web page and the file you want to download) to transfer a copy of the file to your computer.
  • The transfer is handled by a protocol (a set of rules), such as FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol).

Client-server download process

The transfer speed is affected by a number of variables, including the type of protocol, the amount of traffic on the server and the number of other computers that are downloading the file. If the file is both large and popular, the demands on the server are great, and the download will be slow.

For more information about Web servers and the traditional client-server download, see How Web Servers Work.

Peer-To-Peer File Sharing
Another file-transfer method that you may have heard about is called peer-to-peer file sharing. In this process, you use a software program (rather than your Web browser) to locate computers that have the file you want. Because these are ordinary computers like yours, as opposed to servers, they are called peers. The process works like this:

  • You run peer-to-peer file-sharing software (for example, a Gnutella program) on your computer and send out a request for the file you want to download.
  • To locate the file, the software queries other computers that are connected to the Internet and running the file-sharing software.
  • When the software finds a computer that has the file you want on its hard drive, the download begins.
  • Others using the file-sharing software can obtain files they want from your computer's hard drive.

Gnutella's peer-to-peer download process

The file-transfer load is distributed between the computers exchanging files, but file searches and transfers from your computer to others can cause bottlenecks. Some people download files and immediately disconnect without allowing others to obtain files from their system, which is called leeching. This limits the number of computers the software can search for the requested file.

For more information about file sharing and the peer-to-peer download, see How Gnutella Works and How Kazaa Works.

What BitTorrent Does
Unlike some other peer-to-peer downloading methods, BitTorrent is a protocol that offloads some of the file tracking work to a central server (called a tracker). Another difference is that it uses a principal called tit-for-tat. This means that in order to receive files, you have to give them. This solves the problem of leeching -- one of developer Bram Cohen's primary goals. With BitTorrent, the more files you share with others, the faster your downloads are. Finally, to make better use of available Internet bandwidth (the pipeline for data transmission), BitTorrent downloads different pieces of the file you want simultaneously from multiple computers.

Here's how it works:

BitTorrent's peer-to-peer download process

  • You open a Web page and click on a link for the file you want.
  • BitTorrent client software communicates with a tracker to find other computers running BitTorrent that have the complete file (seed computers) and those with a portion of the file (peers that are usually in the process of downloading the file).
  • The tracker identifies the swarm, which is the connected computers that have all of or a portion of the file and are in the process of sending or receiving it.
  • The tracker helps the client software trade pieces of the file you want with other computers in the swarm. Your computer receives multiple pieces of the file simultaneously.
  • If you continue to run the BitTorrent client software after your download is complete, others can receive .torrent files from your computer; your future download rates improve because you are ranked higher in the "tit-for-tat" system.

Downloading pieces of the file at the same time helps solve a common problem with other peer-to-peer download methods: Peers upload at a much slower rate than they download. By downloading multiple pieces at the same time, the overall speed is greatly improved. The more computers involved in the swarm, the faster the file transfer occurs because there are more sources of each piece of the file. For this reason, BitTorrent is especially useful for large, popular files.

How does death by hanging work?

From: http://people.howstuffworks.com/death-by-hanging.htm

January 3, 2007

In the final days of 2006, former Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein was hanged for the 1982 murders of 148 people in Dujail, Iraq. While capital punishment is still on the books in many countries around the world, death by hanging has in many cases been replaced by more sterile killing methods like lethal injection, which some believe to be a more humane form of execution. Many people might be surprised to learn that hanging, when carried out with modern techniques, can be one of the quickest and most painless ways to be executed.

The modern method of judicial hanging is called the long drop. This is the method that Iraqi officials used to execute Saddam Hussein. In the long drop, those planning the execution calculate the drop distance required to break the subject's neck based on his or her weight, height and build. They typically aim to get the body moving quickly enough after the trap door opens to produce between 1,000 and 1,250 foot-pounds of torque on the neck when the noose jerks tight. This distance can be anywhere from 5 to 9 feet (1.5 to 2.7 meters). With the knot of the noose placed at the left side of the subject's neck, under the jaw, the jolt to the neck at the end of the drop is enough to break or dislocate a neck bone called the axis, which in turn should sever the spinal cord. In some cases, the hangman jerks up on the rope at the precise moment when the drop is ending in order to facilitate the breakage.

This is the ideal situation in a long drop. When the neck breaks and severs the spine, blood pressure drops down to nothing in about a second, and the subject loses consciousness. Brain death then takes several minutes to occur, and complete death can take more than 15 or 20 minutes, but the person at the end of the rope most likely can't feel or experience any of it.

In a less-than-ideal long drop, if the distance is miscalculated or some other factor misses the mark, the subject will die of decapitation (if the drop is too long) or of strangulation (if the drop is too short or the noose knot isn't in the correct position). Strangulation can take several minutes and is a far more excruciating experience. The carotid arteries in the neck, which supply blood to the brain, are compressed, and the brain swells so much it ends up plugging the top of the spinal column; the Vagal nerve is pinched, leading to something called the Vagal reflex, which stops the heart; and the lack of oxygen getting to the lungs due to compression of the trachea eventually causes loss of consciousness due to suffocation. Death then follows in the same pattern as it does when the neck breaks, with the entire process ending in anywhere from five to 20 minutes.

When it comes to judicial hanging, the long drop is the most humane way to go. For the person being executed, the actual experience of the hanging lasts anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes -- or at least that's the general belief by forensic scientists. In some countries where executions are carried out by hanging, though, other methods are used. In the short drop, which can be a few inches to a few feet, the subject invariably dies of strangulation and/or the compression of the arteries in the neck. The same type of death occurs in suspension hanging, in which the subject is jerked into the air instead of being dropped. And in a standard-drop hanging, the subjects falls about 5 feet. Depending on the weight and build of the subject, this drop will either break the neck and spinal cord or cause death by strangulation, carotid-artery compression or Vagal reflex. In these older methods, unconsciousness still typically occurs in anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, but if it turns out to be a few seconds, it's blind luck (or bad luck, depending on how the country's legal system views the practice -- if the point of the hanging is severe punishment for the subject and deterrence to other would-be criminals, a "good hang" may be the most gruesome experience possible).

Hanging is a legal method of judicial execution in 58 countries, according to Amnesty International. In 33 of those countries, it is the only method of execution. In the United States, judicial hanging is legal in both Washington state and Delaware, and three prisoners have been hanged since the death penalty was reinstituted in 1976.

Video terbaru mayat Saddam

BAGHDAD 9 Jan.

- AFP
